Where the Locals Go

Frito Pie

If you don’t know what this is, you will soon because this is one of Santa Fe’s iconic dishes. And no it’s not a pie and it’s mostly not served in a dish, but in an individual-sized Frito bag. It’s then topped with chili and beans, onions, and cheese. It’s so good, you’re going to want to make this at home. Here are the top spots to savor this favorite dish.

  • Brochachos' Hot Dogs—Gourmet level hot dogs? Right here. Word has it they also do a decent Frito Pie
  • Chicago Dog Express— Believe it or not, this corner hut located at Paseo de Peralta and Cerrillos is a secret spot for scoring some of the best Frito pie.
  • Del Charro— Another iconic downtown venue, this Western-themed watering hole serves up great drinks and grub. They grind their own grass-fed beef every day for burgers which keeps the locals coming back for more.Special mentions from the group: Open Late, Frito Pie, Chicken Wings
  • Five and Dime— This revered institution on the Plaza is where the hardcore Frito pie lovers turn to when they need a fix. The cafe is all the way in the back of the store. For the authentic Frito pie from the Five and Dime experience, you are encouraged to eat the Frito pie while seated on a bench in the Plaza.
  • Kaune’s Neighborhood Market—Founded in 1896 stocking organic produce, ready-made picnics & sandwiches. Upscale products for foodies and all you foodies in general. Mentions from the group: Frito Pie Friday's, High quality foods, Gourmet options, Historic Location.  A really popular mention are the Chop Shop Salads. (https://www.kaunes.com/chop-salads.html). Fresh full & half salads, chopped & tossed together while you wait. Chop Hours Monday-Friday 8 to 5:30.
  • Plaza Cafe Downtown—The Plaza Cafe, Santa Fe’s oldest restaurant, has been serving highly acclaimed, authentic traditional dishes since 1905. In 1947, Dan (Dionysus) Razatos, a Greek immigrant with an American dream, took over the Plaza Cafe and his family has been feeding Santa Fe ever since. Dan married a local girl named Beneranda Maria Montoya Saiz and together they ran the Plaza and raised six children. As their children grew they all worked at the Plaza and helped to create what the restaurant is today. The Razatos family kept the traditional cooking methods and flavor combinations of New Mexico and added some recipes from Greece, all the while keeping with the classic American diner experience. This is why you’ll find everything from blue corn green chile carne asada enchiladas with a warm pillowy sopaipilla to chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gyro with a Greek salad on the side.   Located on the historic Santa Fe Plaza you won’t find a better view or atmosphere while you enjoy an authentic New Mexican experience. A favorite among locals and movie stars alike, everyone finds what they are looking for at the Plaza. Mentions from the group: Frito Pie
