Santa Fe Foodies

Where the Locals Go

Historic

Historic in Santa Fe goes back to the early 1600s, but our favorite historic restaurants aren’t quite that old. These are a few of the oldest. Whether it’s an original adobe building or longevity, we have counted both in this category. Enjoy Santa Fe’s rich history.

  • El Farol Restaurant— Dating back to 1835, El Farol is a piece of Santa Fe history. Situated along Canyon Road, stop in for a drink or dine in for the full experience. It has been named “one of the best bars on earth” by the New York Times.
  • El Parasol— The El Parasol concept began in 1958 with Pedro and Lorenzo Atencio, ten and twelve years old respectively, selling their mother’s beef tacos and red pork tamales under a patio umbrella on the main street in Espanola. Check out their fascinating history on their website.Yea, it's a taco spot but everyone raves about the burgers.
  • Evangelo’s Cocktail Lounge— This downtown dive is a musical institution that attracts talent from far and wide. Family-owned and run with live music every night and pool tables are downstairs. Tuesday night locals jam hosted by Robin Oxley. Cash only and no Budweiser, so be ready.
  • Kaune’s Neighborhood Market—Founded in 1896 stocking organic produce, ready-made picnics & sandwiches. Upscale products for foodies and all you foodies in general. Mentions from the group: Frito Pie Friday's, High quality foods, Gourmet options, Historic Location.  A really popular mention are the Chop Shop Salads. (https://www.kaunes.com/chop-salads.html). Fresh full & half salads, chopped & tossed together while you wait. Chop Hours Monday-Friday 8 to 5:30.
  • La Plazuela at La Fonda— Established in the 1920s, this garden setting is hard to beat. Choose from breakfast, lunch, or dinner in this historic hotel on the Plaza that proudly boasts a 400-year legacy.
  • Rancho de Chimayó— This traditional New Mexican restaurant is steeped in history, has a James Beard award-winning cookbook and the drive out there is worth the trip.
  • Santa Fe Bite—Subscribing Members Receive 50% off select starters wit meal purchase. Cup of their homemade Texas Chile. Chile Cheese. Homefries topped with Monterey Jack cheese (red, green, Christmas or Texas). • The Legal Tender Saloon and Eating House— The Legal Tender was built in 1881 as the Brown and Manzanares General Store. As Lamy's oldest living structure, this is a piece of history. It was donated to the Lamy Railroad & History Museum in 2006 and is opening in the fall of 2021 as a bar and restaurant.
  • The Pink Adobe & Dragon Room Lounge—The Pink Adobe was established in 1944 by Rosalea Murphy. Known affectionately by locals as "The Pink," the restaurant has grown into a local and national landmark since its humble beginnings serving Dobe Burgers, French onion soup, and hot apple pie. The Pink is located in the center of the historic Barrio de Analco across the street from the San Miguel Mission, which is considered the oldest church in the United States. The restaurant was given its name by Rosalea because of the rose color of the house that is home to the Pink.... For over 50 years Rosalea filled her days using her talents and energy to create a unique flavor, décor and personality that makes this restaurant so special. After Rosalea's passing in 2000, Rosalea's family has continued to honor her work and legacy by keeping The Pink Adobe true to her vision.
